The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is responsible
for all legal services and advice required by the department. This includes the
coordination of legal services and the provision of internal legal advice
(subject to the Legal Services Directions on tied work) including contracts and
grants management, statutory interpretation and regulatory advice,
international trade law and agreements, legislative development privacy, debt
recovery, investigations and enforcement and litigation and claims resolution.
It also manages and advises on matters relating to Freedom of Information (FOI)
and legislative processes.

The team: - manages FOI requests for the Department, providing assistance and
advice to decision-makers; - provides advice on privacy matters; - responds to
privacy complaints and access requests; and - manages claims for discretionary
compensation and financial assistance. Requests are varied and interesting,
spanning departmental functions that include policy, compliance and
enforcement, and program delivery related to functions including imports,
exports, trade, forestry and water resources. Key legislation we advise on
includes: - Privacy Act 1998; - Freedom of Information Act 1982; and -
Biosecurity Act 2015 (Ch 11, Part 2 - confidentiality of information).
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate skills in: - legal
analysis and advising; - effective case management and dispute resolution; -
communication skills, including writing administrative decisions; and -
experience in relevant Commonwealth administrative law, particularly managing
and resolving privacy and FOI matters.
In this role you will work collaboratively within a team under the supervision
of a Principal Government Lawyer. This position would suit a lawyer with around
4 to 6 years of relevant post-admission experience.
